Corporate & Social Responsibility

We don’t operate in isolation and are keen to play our role as a force for good in our local communities – in our view, successful companies like BSD have a duty to put something back into society. So although we have a long track record of investing in our people [link to careers], we also want to be recognised as a good neighbour to other businesses as well as to local residents.

Through a mix of donations and practical help, we support worthwhile causes and make a demonstrable difference where we can.

Pro Bono work

Under our membership of Northamptonshire ProHelp, we’ve pledged 50 hours per year of free professional help to our local community. In recent years we’ve helped a range of community groups and voluntary organisations achieve their aims, including Moulton Church, RSPCA Derby, Hyson Green Youth Club, and The Asian Women’s Association, Nottingham.

Wildlife Trust

We already specialise in ‘green’ solutions to mechanical and electrical engineering challenges, helping to counteract the effects of climate change, but we also want to play our part in other ways too. As a bronze corporate member of The Wildlife Trust, we look beyond the internal design of buildings and focus on what we can do to make life better for wildlife on the outside. We have installed bird feeders outside our headquarters building in Corby and in 2015 added wildflower window boxes.

In 2015 and 2016 we entered the Wildlife Trust BCN’s Wildlife Gardening at work and our efforts were rewarded when we won the Best Small Garden and Best Use of Recycled Materials categories in 2015 and the Best Small Garden and Best Staff Involvement categories in 2016.

Community support

Each year, our people vote for their chosen charity.  For 2017 the staff voted overwhelming to support Bloodwise as our charity of the year in memory of one of our colleagues who lost his battle with Leukaemia earlier this year.  Bloodwise raises awareness of and supports those living with blood cancers as well as funding research into leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood cancer related disorders.

In previous years, across all our offices, we have raised thousands of pounds from activities such as abseiling down a building at the University of Essex, Gung Ho in Manchester, and various smaller competitions and events.  We look forward to seeing what ideas the staff come up with this year.

We also work closely with local schools and colleges to provide opportunities for work experience, work shadowing and mentoring, as well as helping with events such as ‘Dragon’s Dens’ – we provide staff who grill students on their presentations and provide feedback to help them improve.

In addition, we sponsor, match-fund and otherwise support a wide range of initiatives, many of which are organised by members of our staff in their spare time. These initiatives include:

  • The MAGPAS (Mid Anglia General Practitioner Accident Service) air ambulance.
  • Guide Dogs for the Blind
  • Cambridge Bike Ride for Breakthrough Breast Cancer
  • Dragon Boat racing for CRASH, the construction industry’s charity
  • Many local junior and senior football and cricket teams
  • Individual employee charity initiatives, from triathlons and Help for Heroes to Comic Relief, respite care and Children in Need.
