Background

The Cambridge City Hotel was originally completed in 1991 and consists of an entrance foyer at ground floor level with escalator access to Level 1.  Level 1 contains the main hotel reception and central atrium, bar, restaurant, meeting rooms and conference facilities, gymnasium, and the main kitchen and ancillary areas.  There is also a plant room at Level 1, which serves all of the back and front of house areas.

Challenge

BSD was appointed by London & Regional Property Ltd to undertake the design of the building services as part of a major refurbishment of the four star hotel.  The main challenge was to design the services with minimum disruption to an operational hotel.

Solution

The 200 guest rooms were completely refurbished with new bathrooms, new interior design and lighting, new television and IT services.  The front of house areas were re-configured and now have a new interior design incorporating new lighting, new audio visual facilities and new air conditioning.

Our design included complete refurbishment of the all the air handling plant, new VRF heating and cooling and electrical services to all the front of house areas and guest rooms.  We also designed new guest lifts and refurbishment of the existing escalators and service lifts as well as a new Building Management System to improve the operation and efficiency of the central plant.

Outcome

The refurbishment gave a fresh and welcoming atmosphere with added convenience for guests.
