Building Services Design

An innovative but practical office environment

Background

A global leader in consulting, technology, outsourcing, and local professional services, Capgemini was relocating its headquarters to three floors of office space at 40 Holborn Viaduct. However, the new building did not offer all the facilities that Capgemini required, such as a large catering kitchen and an event space for up to 200 people in the middle of the building.

Challenge

From a design perspective, the principal challenge was to incorporate the kitchen and event spaces in a building that did not have the infrastructure to support them. To do so would require new air handling units on the roof and riser space within the building – both of which would need the landlord’s prior approval.

Solution

Working on behalf of Capgemini, we negotiated permission from the landlord for the installation of additional air handling units on the roof and associated riser space, and then designed the remainder of the space to be fitted out to Cat B specification, with a heavy emphasis on sophisticated lighting controls.

Features

  • Display, event and feature lighting, particularly in the 8,000 sq ft Accelerated Solutions Environment (ASE)
  • Multiple lighting source luminaires with colour changing LED and fluorescent lamps, in the ASE
  • Over 150 recessed luminaires and integral adjustable LED spotlights
  • Lighting controlled by a PC visual interface, with the brightness and colour of each light being individually adjustable

Outcome

Capgemini employees now work in an innovative, contemporary and highly configurable office environment of over 5,000 sq m that reflects the company’s ambitions and matches its vision that “the business value of technology comes from and through our people”. Feature corridors are designed as entrances, with floors five and six providing a combination of open plan and cellular offices and meeting rooms to support the differing working practices of the consultant groups, together with a multifunction space and a unique Espresso Zone. The eighth floor accommodates a high-specification client meeting suite, reception and the Accelerated Solutions Environment.
