A contemporary and efficient redevelopment for a leading college

Background

Carmel College is a Catholic 6th Form College in St Helens, Merseyside, that welcomes students of all faiths and backgrounds. Over the years, the college has gone from strength to strength, gaining a national reputation for quality and being designated a Beacon College. In order to meet its ambition to provide an exemplary educational institution to meet the demands of the 21st Century, the college planned a phased redevelopment and expansion programme.

Challenge

A critical challenge was the need to demolish buildings to make way for new-build, without disrupting the day-to-day operation of the college.

Solution

We were appointed to carry out the design of all mechanical, public health and electrical services, working with the main contractor and the mechanical and electrical contractor as part of the design-build team. This close working relationship ensured that the design aligned with the installation team’s needs in terms of practicality and cost. The site experience of the installation team contributed to our design, which evolved to match the team’s methods and programme.

All works were undertaken through a seven-stage phased approach which enabled a timely, cost-effective build with no loss of services or disruption to the students.

Outcome

Our work has helped create a contemporary and efficient learning environment that is appreciated by staff and students alike. The redevelopment and expansion are underpinning the college’s commitment to developing a community of mutual respect where personal qualities are highly valued and each student has the opportunity to reach their absolute potential.
