Birmingham City Council appointed BSD through their CWM contractor framework to lead on the M&E design for the Holford Drive community Sports Hub (‘The Hub’) project. From inception, the BSD team worked closely with the client, contractor and multi-discipline professionals, to overcome the challenges that extremely tight budgetary constraints imposed. BSD proved to be creative in problem resolution and continued to work consistently and collaboratively to meet client expectations. The project was successfully delivered, and is now the pride of the local community.

New pavilion to support sports and leisure facilities

Background

Local people in Perry Barr, Birmingham, planned to create a central sports facility at Holford Drive. This would provide a home for neighbourhood sports teams and also serve as a venue for community activities.

Challenge

As the project was subject to numerous budget changes, a key challenge was to work collaboratively with the rest of the design team in order to create a workable solution.

Solution

Funding was provided by Sport England, the England and Wales Cricket Board, the Premier League and the FA facilities fund. Through the Constructing West Midlands Framework, we were appointed to provide full M&E design for the sports pavilion.

Outcome

Opened by the Duke of Cambridge in December 2014, the Holford Drive Sports Pavilion is now providing state-of-the-art leisure facilities to sports clubs and the local community. The centre is operated by four clubs – Aston Boxing Club, Hampstead Diamonds Tennis Club, Continental Star FC and Continental Cricket. Facilities include four football pitches, a cricket pitch, four floodlit tennis courts, two cricket nets, a boxing hall and changing rooms in addition to two floodlit multi-use games areas, offices and meeting rooms.
