A state-of-the-art extension for a leading hospital

Background

Norfolk and Norwich Hospital was the first PFI Healthcare project to be completed in the UK. The hospital engineering services are maintained by Serco under the umbrella of the PFI Octagon Consortium, until the site is handed back to the NHS. Our Cambridge office was placed on Serco’s list of approved consultants in early 2009 and this has led to our involvement on a number of M&E projects – including work on a new extension to the radiology department to house a new state-of-the-art MRI scanner.

Challenge

The new MRI/CT facility was a complex project that had to be completed to a demanding schedule. In addition, the M&E team had to liaise with external specialist equipment suppliers in order to extract building services data to ensure that the design was accurately specified and effectively implemented.

Solution

Our design encompassed full M&E services including a new HV/LV substation on private close loop HV network, heating, ventilation, cooling, medical gases, security, data, fire detection and alarm design. We also provided designs to manage diversions and modifications to the external infrastructure services.

Outcome

The new MRI/CT facility was delivered ahead of schedule. It now houses a 3T scanner, the first such equipment anywhere in Europe and only the fourth in the world.
