This is a wonderful new building which makes a striking impact across the playing fields. It offers our students more first rate facilities and will ensure that sport at the schools becomes even better.

Stephen Roberts, Principal for the Stamford Endowed Schools

Fully integrated sports complex

Background

Providing tailored and personalised education from junior school to Sixth Form, Stamford Endowed Schools wished to improve pupil facilities by building a new fully integrated sports complex.

Challenge

One of the major challenges was to design the heating and ventilation to the pool hall to meet both client requirements and building standards. In addition, pool water temperature and air temperature/humidity had to be maintained within tight margins. The lighting was also required to meet the standards for inter-school competition levels, with all luminaires accessible for easy maintenance.

Solution

We were appointed to carry out the full detailed design of the mechanical and electrical services elements of the project, including cooling, heating and mechanical ventilation. The detailed design of the electrical services included electrical distribution & metering, general & emergency lighting, general power, lightning protection, fire and security, external lighting, and security & communications, as well as the electrical services associated with the mechanical installation.

Outcome

Now in full operation, the sports centre incorporates a swimming pool, together with a gymnasium, fitness suite, changing facilities, teaching rooms and a hospitality area. A large south-facing terrace covered by an overhanging roof gives spectators an excellent view of the sports pitches.
